PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances) are commonly used in food packaging to make it grease-resistant. These chemicals can leach into food, especially when exposed to heat, leading to human consumption. Long-term exposure to PFAS is linked to health risks, including cancer, liver damage, and hormonal disruption. Due to their persistence in the environment and in the human body, PFAS are known as “forever chemicals.” Concerns are growing about their widespread use, leading to calls for safer alternatives in packaging.
